West Ham United fans were left confused by manager David Moyes’ decision to substitute Jarrod Bowen as their game with Arsenal drew to a close.
Bowen enjoyed a fine game against the Gunners, having three shots on goal throughout the encounter, while also registering one key pass, per WhoScored.
The January signing from Hull City was something of an attacking threat, forcing Bernd Leno to tip one effort against the post at one point.
However, with the Irons trailing after Alexandre Lacazette’s 78th-minute goal, manager David Moyes opted to take Bowen off in the 89th-minute, introducing Robert Snodgrass in his place.
And supporters were quick to take to Twitter to express their confusion at the change.
One fan meanwhile described him as a “tactical dinosaur”, and having seen their club appoint Manuel Pellegrini back instead of the Scot because of his more attacking philosophy, it’s unsurprising that they voiced their dismay at seeing Moyes’ more negative approach.
Snodgrass didn’t exactly have a fine display after his introduction.
While he was perhaps hamstrung by the lack of minutes he was able to play, he had just three touches of the ball.
If Moyes was attempting to see out a 1-0 defeat, he certainly succeeded.
Did he really play for us?! No West Ham fan has managed to name all of these obscure Irons signings….
But it surely made sense to stick with Bowen’s attacking threat; West Ham had 14 shots on goal to Arsenal’s nine and could well have carved out another opportunity for the attacker in the final minute.
Introducing Snodgrass cut that possibility off at the knees.
Meanwhile, West Ham need to move this man on!
