England never make it easy for themselves; conceding in the third minute of a World Cup qualifier with Slovakia yesterday evening being a prime example.
Marcus Rashford naively attempted to take the ball past three Slovakia players on the edge of England’s own third, surrendering possession and allowing the visitors to open the scoring at Wembley with a slick passing move.
Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions side are proving nothing if not resilient, however. They ended a poor first half by levelling the scores just seconds before the interval – Eric Dier latching onto a Rashford corner – to create the basis for a much more convincing second 45.
Rashford was a recurring character once again, this time netting England’s winner with a swerving, dipping drive into the bottom corner, while Kyle Walker was called upon to make a crucial challenge at the back and Harry Kane and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were busy in the final third.
