Neutrals definitely would have enjoyed the EFL Cup final at Wembley yesterday, which saw Manchester United win 3-2 over Southampton following a highly-competitive 90 minutes.Manolo Gabbiadini controversially had a goal incorrectly ruled-out for offside, before Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Jesse Lingard put the Red Devils 2-0 ahead, but the Italian found the net for the Saints just before the interval. The second-half started as the first ended, with Gabbiadini tucking the ball away to level the scoring, but the dreams of Southampton were smashed by Ibrahimovic’s winning goal in the 87th minute.Whilst fans across the globe will have got the competitive match they were hoping for, Everton fans may have quietly been rooting for Manchester United to win- as it aids their chances of playing in Europe next season, as pointed out by manager Ronald Koeman.
Koeman, who left Southampton for Everton last summer, suggested Manchester United’s win was the best result for Everton as it potentially means seventh-place in the Premier League will play in the Europa League next season.
With Everton currently trailing sixth-placed Manchester United by four points, and the Red Devils having a game in hand, this is the most likely avenue to continental football for the Toffees.
