It may seem like ancient history now, but Liverpool were once close to completing the signing of Thomas Lemar in 2017.
The big fat Liverpool quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Anfield?
The France international ended up moving to Atletico Madrid for £52.7m, but that was only after the Reds were close to capturing him. They were even said to have medical staff waiting in Paris to secure his signature, but in the end La Liga was his destination.
Fast-forward two-and-a-half years, and it has not been the best purchase for Los Rojiblancos. The 24-year-old has managed just three goals and six assists in 64 matches for them during that time, and he is now valued at just £27m by Transfermarkt.
Journalist Melissa Reddy has recently put together an article about the transfer saga, and she shared it on her Twitter page.
There are some fans who appear to thankful that they did not capture Lemar, who Reddy says Liverpool offered £64m for.
It certainly looks like Liverpool “dodged a bullet” as these fans believe. However, he did pick up 22 assists in his last two seasons in Ligue 1, which is not to be sniffed at.
Others, meanwhile, believe that he would have done well under Jurgen Klopp.
Given the way the likes of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have flourished under the former Borussia Dortmund boss, it certainly seems viable that he would have done well at Anfield.
Others, meanwhile, have suggested that he could still make the move to Merseyside.
It is not beyond the realms of possibility that he would move to the north-west. It would probably depend on whether or not Atletico would want to recoup the fee they parted with for him.
