Loads of Liverpool fans on Twitter suspect that Adam Lallana is going to be a shock selection in a defensive midfield position against Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday.
The 31-year-old has been known as an attack-minded player throughout his career, but manager Jurgen Klopp used him in the No.6 role on a couple of occasions during pre-season, and suggested at the time he believes it could be his best position for this season.
Still, it would be a huge surprise given the depth the Merseyside outfit have if he did start a top flight match there so early in the campaign.
The England international was an unused substitute for the club’s Super Cup success against Chelsea in Istanbul on Wednesday night, but with Fabinho struggling and suffering cramp, captain Jordan Henderson looking visibly tired and James Milner putting an ice pack on his knee having been substituted off in the 64th minute, the Reds may well not want to risk any of the trio from the start against the Saints in less than 48 hours’ time.
Liverpool supporters on the popular social media platform appear to have considered that possibility, and as a result many appear to be expecting the former Southampton man to play a deeper role against his former employers.
While one individual said they “can’t wait for fan fume” with Lallana not exactly proving popular in recent seasons, another said “bet Lallana starts #6 vs Southampton”.
They may not be right though, with Klopp also admitting previously that it could only really happen in a game where they dominate – whether the German considers that to be the case away against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men remains to be seen.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
