Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with a move for Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles throughout 2018, but does a potential Magpies takeover put paid to any potential deal?
What’s the word, then?
Well, the Newcastle Evening Chronicle reported in October that Spurs were monitoring the impressive 25-year-old ahead of the January transfer window, although the centre-back signed a new six-year deal just a few days later.
That obviously boosted his value to the Tyneside outfit but certainly didn’t rule out a departure for the right price in the future – especially under the leadership of Mike Ashley.
It is a position that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is likely to want to strengthen with continued doubts over the future of Toby Alderweireld – the Belgian was also left out of the starting XI for the north London derby against Arsenal on Sunday.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that Newcastle owner Ashley could be closer to selling the club as he considers bids, which could have big consequences for the playing staff.
Could Tottenham still sign Lascelles?
The fact that he has already signed a six-year certainly made things more difficult in terms of the two clubs agreeing on an acceptable transfer fee, but a takeover could change things completely.
It seems likely that Rafa Benitez will be staying in the north-east for the long-term if it goes through, and he will have ambitious plans to take Newcastle up the Premier League table and beginning to compete for European qualification.
The Spaniard will make whoever the new owner may be well aware of the fact that he needs his best players and his skipper at St James’ Park to do that, and person or group in question certainly wouldn’t be popular with either the former Liverpool boss or the passionate supporters if they chose to cash in on him.
Olivier Giroud is set for a starring role in the new Spiderman and it’s easy to see why! Check out the video below to find out more…
